Learn about VoIP and video calling

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, which basically means talking to people over the internet. Computer to computer talking is free (as is computer to USA toll free numbers - 800 numbers - remember to add 001, the international dialing code), and that includes video calling. You could be sat in a cottage in Devon video calling a relative in Australia and it's free!

To voice and video call for free over the internet you'll need:
- Skype
- An Internet connection (preferably broadband)
- A microphone and headphones headset
- A webcam (if you want to video call)

So, to get started you're going to need Skype and a Skype account. Click the logo below to sign up (free), download (free) and install (free) Skype.

Next you're going to need a headset and you'll need a webcam if you wish to video call. These are the only bits are that going to cost you anything extra (as long as you've got an internet connection).

For headsets you could try:

For webcams you could try:

Or for a headset and webcam bundle you could try:

So, you're all set...

Right, plug your headset into your computer as per the instructions which came with either your computer or the headset. Usually the green mini jack port and the pink one.

Install your webcam software then, when told by the software, plug in your webcam - if it's a USB webcam you should be able to plug it into any port.

Now log onto the internet and sign into Skype. Skype should take you though its set up process as it checks your microphone, headphones and webcam.

Now it's up to you to find out your friends and relatives' Skype addresses and type them into your contacts list. Feel free to Skype us, our Skype address is wildduckproductions
